The Meatless Monday Family Cookbook by Jenn Sebestyen is a wonderful cookbook because it shows all of us how to make and eat meals that don’t contain meat. It also goes one step further,  making family friendly dishes and even gives tips on how to get your kids on board with eating meatless Monday (or any day of the week!) meals. Why try Meatless Monday?

This book begins with lots of great advice on how and why to try eating meatless meals. These meals are perfect for busy weeknights and there are so many flavor options, you’ll be able to start even the pickiest of eaters onto the path of eating healthier. She suggests that you start with flavors and meals that your family is already familiar with, and enjoy. As you branch out, it’s time to try new flavors and dishes that your family has never tried before. She even goes into great detail about the type of ingredients that you will be using in this cookbook and can start to include as staples in your pantry. These include; grains, legumes, nuts and seed, pastas, spices and more.

Getting the Kids Involved

This book contains a list of great ideas on how to get kids eager to try meatless Mondays. Some of her ideas include;

  • Start them out with eating meatless as a young age
  • Offer them a variety of options
  • Don’t shy away from flavors, let’s them try and experiment right along with you
  • Let them choose the meals sometimes
  • Take them grocery shopping for the ingredients
  • Ask your kids to help you cook the meals, they will be invested in liking their own creations
  • and You can set a good examples as you learn to eat meatless right along with them

The Meatless Monday Family Cookbook Recipes

There are so many options for you to choose from, with chapters including things like; Loaded Handhelds, One Pot Wonders and even Breakfast for Dinner. I took her advice for my first meal to try, and went with flavors and foods that I like – Mexican! I found a a really easy recipe for Black Bean Tacos with Corn Radish Salsa and Pickled Red Onions. The title had me a little worried, but when I read through the recipe I knew that I could handle it. And was it worth it! The salsa was so different from what I had tasted before, but the tacos made it familiar and oh so tasty. You’ll have to get that a try. Next on my list to try are; Pumpkin Maple Glazed Penne with Roasted Fall Vegetables and Chickpea Scramble Breakfast Burrito. 

You will find old favorites to try meatless as well as ways that you can branch out and try your cooking and dining skills to make your diet healthier. I highly recommend The Meatless Monday Family Cookbook and it might be the perfect gift from someone on your holiday list this year!
