Go for a photo walk

Today let’s take a break and go for a photo walk. You are thinking to yourself, “I’m not a photographer” or “I don’t have time to get out my camera and take a hike”. This photo walk can be as long or short as you want, and it’s NOT about getting a perfect picture. In fact it’s not about getting a picture to share with anyone at all. This is about changing your perspective and looking at things in a new way.

It’s been a rough day. Taking cares of demands of other people. Someone wants you to do something, and you carry out the task and move on to the next activity. If you stop and try to think about what you did today, it might be pretty hard to come up with a clear view of all the things you did. That’s because you’ve been running on autopilot and getting that to-do list done in the most efficient way possible.

Now its your time to slow down, and really look at things, and think about things in a different way. Today’s photo walk is going to be a sort of scavenger hunt to give your mind a goal and a mission to complete in a way you may have never tried before.

Go for a photo walk to find specific items

Use any kind of camera that you have access to. I personally use my camera phone during my photo walks. It’s an easy aim and shoot way to take pictures, and it’s light enough to carry in a pocket. We are going to choose 5 to 7 items to be on the lookout for. You can write these things down on a list (if you use your phone, you can make a list in a note taking app) or pick items that will be easy for you to remember. You don’t need to think about where you need to go to “find” something that meets those items, just take a normal route that you like to walk and see what you can find, you might be pleasantly surprised.

List of ideas to find on your photo walk

  • Something that…
  • is purple
  • looks like a triangle
  • is way up high
  • has a shadow
  • has water on it
  • is orange
  • plays a song
  • is smaller than a bug
  • sparkles
  • is bigger than a horse
  • has thorns or sharp edges
  • changes colors
  • was stepped on
  • looks like a letter of the alphabet
  • is good enough to eat
  • smells heavenly
  • would quench your thirst
  • delivers a message
  • is a gift
  • is friendly
  • makes a sound

Now, if you are scared after seeing those ideas, let me take you on a pretend walk and see what we could find. I’m walking out my front door and starting to walk down a city sidewalk. I look to my right and I see this bright colored mailbox. (Something that delivers a message) and I take a quick photo. I didn’t want to be too obvious, so I just look a long shot where it’s going to be really small in the picture, but I know that it’s the mailbox I want to remember. Across the street I see a wrought iron fence with arrow points on top (Something that has thorns or sharp edges). I keep walking and I see my favorite bakery up ahead on the left (Something that smells heavenly). OK, the smell is too much and I decide to stop in the bakery and have a cupcake, because this is my time to relax after all! Then I start to think about my friend that I’m meeting for dinner tonight, and I snap a picture of my cupcake (Something that is a gift) and I buy a cupcake for Jenny as I’m about to leave the bakery, to surprise her with tonight. I cross the intersection and I see a sign at the barbershop and it is flashing at me. Since I already took a picture of something that delivers a message, I decide to take a picture for my last item (Something that changes colors).

Wow that list was completed in a walk that was just 2 blocks long, and I got a treat for myself and a gift for my friend along the way! I think I will need to go for a photo walk to relax more often. It’s surprising what you will see when you let your brain think in different ways. That park bench that you see every single day, suddenly becomes something that looks like a letter of the alphabet because the arm rest is the perfect letter T. And usually I am looking at the ground, or just out in front of me, but today I discovered the prettiest patio garden on the 3rd story of the building next to me because I was looking for Something this is way up high.

This list of ideas can be altered or added to in any way you like. Try to look for a different color each time you go for a photo walk. I’ve had a great time looking for all the letters of the alphabet over the course of several photo walks. Do any type of list that makes you happy, and stretches the way that you look at the world around you. Please feel free to share your photos in the comments below, we’d love to see your interpretation of what you saw today! I hope you have a fantastic time as you go for a photo walk!
