National Ice Cream Cone Day? Yes, it is a nationally recognized day, and today is the day – September 22nd. Now this is a holiday that I can really get in to! I can find a lot of good reasons to eat ice cream, but today the treat is going to be extra special because an ice cream cone is also required.
Ice Cream Cones
There are 3 main types of ice cream cones.
- Wafer Cones (or cake)
- Sugar Cones
- Waffle Cones
Personally I think that all 3 types have their own place and perfect occasion. At home, I like a sugar cone. I seem to crush the wafer cones too easily when I am trying to put as much ice cream in as I can reasonably try to do. So the sugar cones are a little more sturdy.
Of course, if I’m needing to make more than 1 cone on my own at home, the flat bottom of the wafer cone works, it you can convince that cone that it needs to stay upright for you. This becomes quite the feat when you have a german shepherd dog creeping closer and closer to the counter “just in case” there might be a tipping issue that it becomes “her” cone by default. I tell her time and time again, ice cream is not for dogs…but she just laughs and dares those less than perfectly flat cones to tip her way.
When I’m out and about, and special ice cream flavors are calling my name, a waffle cone is just the thing.
Pick Your Flavor
Now this is the hard part. Trying to pick the ice cream that needs to make up this special ice cream cone. Are you a basic ice cream lover, vanilla or chocolate is just for you. A fun ice cream lover favoring the chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, or ice cream filled with chocolate peanut butter cups. How about the fruit options; peach, strawberry, dark cherry, raspberry, blueberry (how about blueberry cheesecake!) mango or apple. Maybe it’s the different and daring you prefer such as avocado or extra virgin olive oil ice cream. Or is a mix for you, like a neapolitan ice cream with 3 flavors in a single scoop.
And there are so many more options; coffee, dulce de leche, green tea, fudge ripple (or really, anything ripple!), moose tracks, pistachio, spumoni, blue moon, tutti frutti. When all is said and done. I would have to say that mint chocolate chip is still my favorite. I love to try variety, but mint chocolate chip will always be my choice.
